Advanced Nuclear First Mover Initiative: Ready, set, grow

The National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO) partnered with the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear (GAIN) to launch the Advanced Nuclear First Movers Initiative. The Initiative, directed by state energy offices, is led by state co-chairs New York, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee and Wyoming, and the participating states Louisiana, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia and West Virginia.
INL serves as the GAIN integrator for NE for a reason, said Jess Gehin, associate laboratory director for Nuclear Science and Technology at INL. “INL’s significant experience in leading nuclear energy R&D programs made it the ideal choice to head the GAIN initiative and work with other national laboratories on GAIN’s mission.”

DOE Identifies 16 Federal Sites Across the Country for Data Center and AI Infrastructure Development

DOE released a Request for Information (RFI) to inform possible use of DOE land for artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure development to support growing demand for data centers. DOE has identified 16 potential sites uniquely positioned for rapid data center construction, including in-place energy infrastructure with the ability to fast-track permitting for new energy generation such as nuclear.

FY-2025 2nd Round Proposals Due

Proposals for the FY-2025 2ndt Round GAIN Nuclear Energy (NE) Vouchers are due by 5:00pm EST on Friday, January 31, 2025. For this round of proposals, applications must be aligned with the scopes of the following U.S. Department of Energy programs and must not exceed the maximum funding listed. Applications submitted during this round that are outside the technical scope of these programs and/or include a request for more funding than what is available may not be considered for funding.

DOE Providing up to $28 Million to Strengthen Grid Capacity for Data Centers, Manufacturing

Funding will help states, grid operators, and large electricity customers accommodate electricity demand driven by data centers, AI, and Domestic Manufacturing.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Grid Deployment Office is investing up to $28 million through the Collaborations Advancing Rapid Load Additions (CARLA) Program to accelerate deployment of critical infrastructure that supports significant electricity demand driven by data center expansion and the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) applications, domestic manufacturing growth, and electrification. Administered by ConnectWerx, CARLA will help rapidly build grid capacity that can accommodate significant near-term electricity demand growth.

Heat Exchanger Evaluation, NuCube Energy

NuCube will partner with Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to receive assistance in computational analysis of the heat exchanger design. INL has developed a code to optimize high temperature heat exchangers for both installation and operating costs and has validated that code for conventional shell and tube heat exchangers. This analysis will allow NuCube to assess the performance of the heat exchanger and support an optimized design prior to finalization of the detailed design and fabrication to support a demonstration project.

Analysis of NuCycle® Flowsheet for Waste Stream Characterization, Curio Solutions

Curio will partner with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) to conduct an analysis of the NuCycle® flowsheet that will allow the generation of quantities and classification of anticipated waste streams and recommendations on waste forms most suitable to sequestering the generated waste streams. Results of the project would be used to determine the approach to managing waste from a pilot demonstration of NuCycle® to be performed in 2027.

Development of Analytical Techniques for Trace Impurities in 2LiF-BeF2, Kairos Power

Kairos will partner with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) to extend measurements of dissolved oxygen and corrosion products in FLiBe to the full range of relevant/significant impurities, as well as incorporating the measurement methods into their quality assurance program/practices. Refinement of analytical methods for species in salt that impact system operation will enable Kairos to continue along the aggressive timeline for near term nuclear demonstration and commercial deployment.

Independent Verification and Benchmark of Deep Fission’s Deep Borehole Microreactor Thermal Hydraulic System Behavior, Deep Fission

Deep Fission will partner with Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to enhance its thermal hydraulics infrastructure using RELAP5-3D modeling. INL has unique expertise in developing thermomechanical and thermos-hydro-mechanical models in deep geological repositories for used nuclear fuel and geothermal applications involving deep hole drilling and heat extraction.
