Hussein S. Khalil is a senior advisor for GAIN and the research program director for nuclear science and engineering at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL).

As an advisor for GAIN, Dr. Khalil contributes to the planning and execution of GAIN activities aimed at accelerating the commercial deployment of innovative nuclear energy technologies and enhancing industry access and utilization of technical resources in the national lab complex. As part of GAIN, he also pursues collaborations and opportunities for industry through programs managed by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Nuclear Energy, other DOE offices and national agencies.

At ANL, he provides technical and strategic leadership for Argonne’s research to enhance the performance, safety and economics of nuclear energy applications. Since joining ANL in 1983, he has led research to optimize fast-reactor core design and improve computational methods for reactor physics, dynamics and fuel cycle analysis.

Dr. Khalil is an Argonne Distinguished Fellow and a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society. He earned a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983 and an MBA from the University of Chicago in 1996. He has authored and coauthored approximately 150 technical publications in the field of nuclear energy.
